Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has directed that vegetables to be used for the noon-meal scheme in schools should be organic and grown on the school premises itself.

In a direction to the General Education secretary, the commission said an action plan should be drawn up to ensure a permanent mechanism for sourcing the vegetables required locally.

The commission also directed the Director of Public Instruction to give strict instructions to ensure pure drinking water for students in schools.

The commission also directed the General Education Secretary to take a legal decision on making yoga part of the school curriculum.

The action comes on a complaint by the Kunnathoor environment protection committee in Kollam district.
