Stating that India is far beyond several other countries in terms of development, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit said here on Tuesday that corruption is hindering the country's growth.

According Mr. Purohit, the country will become a superpower only if transparency is maintained in all areas of development.

“The main cause for India lagging behind is the amount of corruption that is still prevalent in our country. Now, it is your responsibility to make the country visible. All of us have to be honest,” said Mr. Purohit in his address at the founder’s day celebrations of Kumaraguru College of Technology (KCT) in Coimbatore on Tuesday.

Observing that Japan and China have witnessed tremendous progress, the Governor said that the country will become a super power if transparency is maintained.

“To be honest, you must live a very simple life just like Mahatma Gandhi did. Be honest and people will respect you. Channelise your thoughts and energy for the betterment of our society,” said Mr. Purohit, drawing inspiration from Gandhi's life.

“The vision of the father of our nation was to make a country where all people are happy and are treated equally. We must rise ourselves,” he added.

Mr. Purohit presented Dr. N. Mahalingam Award to G. D. Gopal, managing director of Geedee Technical Training Institute and UMS Technologies Ltd and Avvai Natarajan, Tamil scholar and educationist. Arul Avvai Natarajan received the award on behalf of his father. He also opened the renovated Mahatma Gandhi Central Library and newly developed meditation centre 'Gnana Sabai'.

KCT chairman B. K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar earlier in his address recalled his association with Mr. Purohit in the activities of Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan. The founder's day was held to commemorate the 95th birth anniversary of N. Mahalingam.
