Coimbatore Corporation will soon execute a project to augment water supply in Kurichi and Kuniamuthur at ₹165.43 crore.
A release here by the civic body has said that though it supplied water to the two areas (20 Wards) from Pilloor, Siruvani and Aliyar, it was inadequate to meet the demand.
It was able to supply water at only 70 litres a person a day by giving water only once in seven to eight days.
To distribute water at 135 litres a person a day by giving water every water every two days, the corporation would undertake the augmentation project by constructing over head tanks and laying new distribution pipelines. With these, the corporation believed that it would be able to supply water with enough pressure to reach the residents.
The corporation, with the help of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, would tap 35.02 million litres of Siruvani water a day and convey it to a 15-lakh-litre sump near Kovaipudur Pirivu. From there it would pump water through 15.20 km long pipelines to a master balancing reservoir of similar capacity in Press Enclave.
And to another 20-lakh-litre master balancing reservoir in Pillaiyarpuram to meet Kurichi’s demands. The new reservoir would also get another 11.25 lakh litres from the reservoir that was in use storing Aliyar water.
To the other added areas - Thudiyalur, Vellakinaru, Chinnavedampatti, Saravanampatti, Vilankurichi and Kalapatti - the corporation would implement another scheme at ₹189.57 crore.
From the Press Enclave master balancing reservoir, the corporation would convey water to 18 existing over head tanks and the seven it proposed to construct through 21 km pipeline, which it would lay soon, for equitable distribution of water.
This would pave the way for the corporation to give new water connections to 19,584 domestic applicants and 867 commercial establishments.
