The Central government should take control of Mullaperiyar dam and hand it over to military for protection. The Centre should ensure foolproof security to the structure.
Such measures alone would instil confidence in the minds of people in Tamil Nadu, said Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam leader Vijayakant on Wednesday.
He was presiding over a demonstration on Madurai-Theni highway near the Central Bus Stand here.
The dam should be under the control of the military till the five-member committee constituted by the Supreme Court submitted its report. Neither Kerala government nor Keralites respected the Supreme Court order. While the borders were in flames, the Centre added fuel to it by watching the situation and not taking any concrete steps. “Its silence will ultimately spoil the integrity of the nation,” he cautioned.
All MPs, irrespective of their political affiliation, should resign en masse as a mark of protest against the Central government. People should realise the double standards adopted by the Congress party and it should get reflected in the Parliament election, said the DMDK leader.
The State government too should take all efforts and the DMDK MLAs were prepared to resign for this cause.
Hitting hard at the statements of Kerala politicians, he said that the dam was very strong and would withstand any calamity in future.
Flaying police lathicharge on protesters in Goodalur and Cumbum Mettu, Mr. Vijayakant asked the police not to work against the people.
“They just vent their emotions and feelings. People should be allowed to express their feelings. The situation turned worse only when Sabarimala pilgrims were attacked by agitators in Kerala. Till then, our people remained silent,” he stated.
