‘No basis for initiating proceedings against her friend'

The All-India Democratic Women's Association has expressed shock at the latest developments in the death of Nirupama, wherein a court ordered that cases be registered against Priyabanshu, friend of the deceased, on charges of abetment to suicide, rape, cheating, and criminal intimidation.

Nirupama Pathak, a 23-year-old journalist was found dead at her parental house in Kodarma. She wanted to marry Priyabanshu, who belonged to a different caste, against her family's wishes.

This led to her death, a case of honour killing, the AIDWA said, with the autopsy report confirming murder, contrary to the family's claims that she committed suicide. “Since the relationship between Nirupama and Priyabanshu was of a voluntary nature, the question of rape or cheating does not arise,” AIDWA president Subhashini Ali said.
