BJP and Shiv Sena seek President’s rule

November 05, 2009 12:19 am | Updated December 17, 2016 05:13 am IST - MUMBAI:

A team of Shiv Sena and BJP leaders met Maharashtra Governor S.C. Jamir on Wednesday and demanded imposition of President’s rule in the State owing to the delay in government formation by the Congress and NCP.

The delegation demanded that Mr. Jamir set a 24-hour ultimatum to the Congress and the NCP to resolve their differences and form a government. If they could not, the Governor could recommend Central rule. “We briefed the Governor of the situation. If there is no outcome after 24 hours, we will decide our next move,” Shiv Sena Legislative Party leader Subhash Desai said.

A Raj Bhavan release said: “The delegation told the Governor that the caretaker government of Chief Minister Ashok Chavan should not be allowed to function for an indefinite period. It pointed out that issues such as malnutrition in tribal areas, fair price for agricultural produce, deterioration in the law and order are awaiting urgent attention of the government.”

Mr. Jamir told the delegation of his meeting with Mr. Chavan and Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal on Tuesday. He felt it was their responsibility to respect the mandate and form a government without any further delay.
