Banking operations in Coimbatore were hit on Tuesday.

Banking operations in Coimbatore were hit on Tuesday.

Banking transactions worth nearly ₹ 1,100 crore got affected in the district as the employees of commercial banks, with the exception of a few private sector- new generations banks, struck work on Tuesday.

United Forum of Bank Unions district convener D. Manoharan claimed that around 5,500 employees from the rank of sub-staff to Scale-III managers working in 333 bank branches, took part in the strike.

The employees were demanding implementation of Parliamentary committee recommendations on recovery of non-performing assets (NPAs) and adequate recruitment of employees across the ranks, among others.

They opposed the tendency of writing off the huge NPAs of corporate firms.

Banking sources told The Hindu that the striking employees would attract the ‘dies non’ clause and salary would be deducted for the day.

Due to the strike, foreign exchange transactions, cheque and bill clearances, cash transactions and electronic money transfers were affected.

Nearly 2,000 bank officers and employees staged a demonstration to press their demands here on Tuesday as part of the All India strike called by United Forum of Bank Unions.

According to bank officials, normal bank functioning was hit in over 900 branches of nationalised, private, rural and co-operative banks in the district because of the strike. Only the branches of the new generation private bank functioned. The strike was against the policies of the government such as privatisation of banks, and merger. The demands of the unions included strong action on non-performing assets of large companies, the officials said.
