R. Rathul Nath, student of Government College, Madappally, has been selected for an integrated Ph.D. programme (in physics) of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. He is the only student from Kerala to be selected for the programme this year.

It is for the second consecutive year that a student from the Department of Physics of the college is being selected. Last year, V. Vaisakh made the grade. Mr. Nath, who has just finished his Bachelor's degree in physics from the college, cleared a national-level entrance test and an interview conducted by the institute recently. This native of Kodiyeri, near Thalassery, in Kannur says some of his outstanding teachers have kindled a passion for physics in him. “I wouldn't have made this achievement but for them,” says Mr. Nath, who will soon pack up to be a student of one of the premier science institutes of the country. He loves to pursue his higher studies in astrophysics; the distinct method through which physics approaches phenomena of the universe attracted him to the discipline.
