The Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) has decided to take up blockade of two major national highways passing through Telangana region on February 24 (NH-7) and March 2 (NH-9) as part of its plans to step up the movement seeking statehood to the region.
Dates for bringing vehicular traffic to a standstill for 24 hours on the two national highways were decided at a marathon extended executive committee meeting of the TJAC held here on Sunday. “Telangana activists will stay put on the national highways at selected points to prevent any movement of traffic by holding meetings and cultural programmes,” TJAC chairman M. Kodandaram stated after the meeting.
Bus ‘yatras’ would be taken up to spread information about the highway blockade from Shasmshabad to Alampur (NH-7) on February 11-12 and from Hayathnagar to Kodad (NH-9) on February 27-28, Prof. Kodandaram explained. Campaigns in support of the movement would also be carried out in all Assembly constituencies in the region from February 16 to 21.
A massive ‘Chalo Assembly’ programme would be organised during the budget session of the Assembly to press for the demand of Telangana.
BJP keeps away
One of the political partners of TJAC, BJP, kept away from the meeting citing “other engagements” as the reason. However, sources stated that the party was unhappy over its leaders not getting prominence in ‘Samara Deeksha’ held here last week.
