At the annual press conference held here on Friday, Cyberabad Police Commissioner Ch. Dwaraka Tirumala Rao said that all DCPs had been directed to set up helpdesks for women at all police stations. Curiously, the helpdesks will be headed by a woman official who will be in constant touch with the victims.
The police may have won accolades for ensuring peaceful conduct of several global events, including CoP-11, but murders, kidnaps and cheating cases registered a sharp increase in Cyberabad this year. Cyber crimes too have gone up. Incidentally, crimes against women saw a decline.
At the annual press conference held here on Friday, Cyberabad Police Commissioner Ch. Dwaraka Tirumala Rao said 174 murders, 154 kidnaps and 1,630 cheating cases were reported in 2012 as against 156, 113 and 1,136 cases, respectively, reported last year. As many as 20 cases of murder for gain were reported, while 14 cases were solved.
“We detected some murders for gain cases, while some remained undetected. But we still continue to track them,” Mr. Rao said, adding that the police gave priority to preventing property offences with focus on bodily offences. In 2012, as many as 58 cases were reported at the cyber crime police station as against 31 last year. Of the 58 cases, 25 were solved. They include five cases of phishing, two Nigerian frauds, 10 pertaining to abusive mails, four each of source code theft and ATM card frauds.
Twenty-five persons, including two Nigerians, were arrested, and eight laptops, 15 cell phones and a car, all worth over Rs.1.42 lakh, were recovered. “It’s difficult to contain cyber crimes, but over a period of time it could be controlled,” Mr. Rao said.
He explained that the Cyberabad commissionerate was a peculiar area covering urban, semi-urban and rural areas due to which more number of cases were registered when compared to other districts in the State. In all, 24,652 cases were booked this year as against 23,119 in 2011 and 22,793 in 2010.
A special cell headed by an inspector will be created soon to specially work on snatching cases in coordination with the local police.
Complaints received at the cell would be monitored daily by a special online application developed by the Cyberabad Police. The initiative will enable them to curb crimes against women. Snatchings and dacoities too were up this year.
