Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu called off his eight-day-old hunger strike, demanding higher compensation for farmers hit by rains and floods, here on Friday evening, following persuasion by leaders of 10 parties.

He sipped coconut water offered by them at the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences here.

The TDP leader, who began his fast on December 17, was forcibly administered intravenous fluids on Thursday.

The party leaders told journalists they had requested Mr. Naidu not to risk his life as he had done his job.

The leaders who called on him were Prakash Karat (CPI-M), A.B. Bardhan (CPI), Sharad Yadav (Janata Dal-United), Om Prakash Chautala (INLD), Ajit Singh (Rashtriya Lok Dal), Vaiko (MDMK), M. Thambi Durai (AIADMK), Arun Kumar Sarma (Asom Gana Parishad), Danish Ali (Janata Dal-Secular) and R. Devaraj (All-India Forward Bloc).

These leaders decided to address a joint rally in Guntur, tentatively on December 30, and express their views on the agrarian crisis in Andhra Pradesh.
