Several contradictions in Jagan case, says noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani

June 29, 2012 02:42 am | Updated November 16, 2021 11:16 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

The judgment in the petition filed by Kadapa MP Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy seeking bail will be delivered by the High Court on July 4.

Justice Samudrala Govindarajulu made this announcement on Thursday after conclusion of the arguments on Thursday.

Mr. Ashok Bhan, special counsel appearing for the CBI, said that the CBI was a premier investigation agency and its actions cannot be found fault with. He said that the arrest was made when the witnesses were not forthcoming and if Jagan was released on bail, the investigation would be hampered.

He tried to discuss the merits of the case but the Judge reminded him that he was arguing against a bail application and the merits need not be gone into deeply at this stage.

Questionable reputation

Senior advocate Ram Jethmalani, appearing for Jagan, said that the CBI had the reputation of bungling the investigation and cited Supreme Court judgments finding fault with the agency. He said that the case of the CBI was based upon surmises and conjectures.

He pointed out that the arrest memo had shown that Jagan was taken into custody as he was influencing the witnesses, whereas the remand report claimed that he was evasive during questioning. There were several contradictions in the case.

Mr. Jethmalani said the investigation was going on for 10 months and letters were sent to foreign countries. These countries would never reply to the notices and the CBI would continue to say that the investigation was in progress. He lamented that till now the CBI could not show one instance where the witnesses were not coming forward to depose against Jagan due to the alleged pressure.
