On the eve of the first anniversary of the terror strike in Mumbai last year, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday saluted the indomitable spirit of the people of India in general and Mumbai in particular.

“We have learnt that no terrorist attack will ever be able to hit at the spirit of Mumbai and its people,” Ms. Gandhi said in a statement. Referring to the resilience and determination with which Mumbaikars have resumed their lives, she added: “If the terrorists were seeking to divide our nation, create chaos and divert us from our chosen path, they miscalculated totally. India has emerged stronger.”

Describing the hostage situation that stretched over 50 hours as an “assault on the very idea of India,” Ms. Gandhi recalled the efforts made by all – security personnel, doctors, hotel staff and ordinary citizens – to save others.
