A government official was killed with his wife and four children in a bomb blast in Pakistan’s restive Kurram tribal region today, an apparent retaliatory attack against military operations in the restive region.

Another child of the official was seriously injured in the explosion, officials of the local political administration said.

The bomb was planted close to the home of Sarfraz Khan, a senior official of the political administration of Kurram Agency, and went off with a loud bang early this morning.

Mr. Khan’s daughter, who sustained serious injuries, was taken to a nearby hospital. Police and security forces cordoned off the house and security was beefed up in the area.

Troops also launched a search for the attackers.

Kurram Agency has witnessed violent clashes between Shia and Sunni tribesmen over the past two years. Scores have died in the violence.

The situation took a turn for the worse after Taliban militants infiltrated the area and began supporting the Sunnis.
