Several US and Afghan troops were reportedly killed in a shootout inside a joint military base in eastern Afghanistan on Monday, officials said.

“The fight started when one individual in an Afghan security forces’ uniform started firing at the foreign troops,” US military official Jamie Graybeal said.

“We are still looking into it. It was a joint Afghan-US forces base.” The incident took place in the Jalrez district of Wardak province, officials said.

“As you can hear, the shooting is still ongoing at the moment,” District Governor Naqibullah Haidari told DPA by phone.

“We don’t have any figure about causalities, but we know several soldiers are dead,” he said.
