Armed rebels shot and wounded Lairenllakpam Ibomcha, 37, brother-in-law of L. Leirentombi, a gram panchayat pradhan of Uyumpok, in Imphal's East district on Tuesday night. Shot in the abdomen, Mr. Ibomcha is stated to be in critical condition.

The rebels have been demanding Rs.1 lakh from the pradhan. On Tuesday night, they went to her house demanding that they wanted to talk with the pradhan's husband. Even as the family members were reluctant to open the door, Mr. Ibomcha happened to be returning home from work. The rebels simply opened fire at him.

On April 16, some other rebels shot and injured Laishram Mocha, 28, younger brother of Laishram Rishikanta, a gram panchayat pradhan. Mr. Mocha is battling for his life.

In another incident, a person was shot dead at Leimapokpam.

Residents of Soibam Leikai beat up two self-proclaimed rebels who had come to the house of Maibam Tombi, 52, a small trader, for extorting money.
