Her younger sister was allegedly sexually abused the same night
A 22-year-old rape victim who set herself on fire, alleging police inaction and mental harassment by her rapists, died on Sunday in Rohtak, while back home in Panipat, her younger sister was allegedly sexually abused that very night.
The elder sister, who attempted suicide in Panipat on June 5, had received 85 per cent burns. In her statement to a judicial magistrate, she alleged that she had been mentally harassed and physically abused by three Panipat police constables, police informer Kuldeep Sharma and his friend Rohit Chawla.
According to the statement, on May 23 the victim was abducted from an auto stand and taken to the Chandnibagh police station in a police jeep by the five men and sexually abused.
She attempted suicide on May 31, but despite complaints, identification parade and assurances from politicians no arrests were made until June 10, when the Panipat police arrested Rohit.
The victim also identified constable Radhey Sham Sharma, who has not been arrested yet, as her rapist.
The girl's father left for Panipat after receiving the news of his younger daughter's rape. He learnt of the elder daughter's death while registering a complaint of rape in Panipat.
“I was in Rohtak at the time the incident occurred. As I reached Panipat, I got the information about the elder one's death and had to rush back. I will not withdraw the complaints, and will pursue both the cases. Otherwise, how will I justify myself to my daughters?” he said. “Why is God so unkind to me,” he asked.
Let down, says father
“Not just the Haryana police, the administration, the politicians all have let us down. Nothing has been done to the men involved in the heinous crime,” said an angry relative of the victim.
The father has charged the police with sheltering the accused, even though his elder daughter had identified a constable as one of the rapists.
He alleged that except for Rohit, who was arrested after he met Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the police had been delaying the arrest of the rest.
On June 11, Rohit was produced before the court and no remand was taken by police. He was given judicial custody.A Chandnibagh police official said: “Two persons, including the main accused and younger brother of the co-accused have been arrested. The constable identified by the girl was not a regular staffer of the police station, but deployed with FSL [forensic science laboratory] team.
“Other constables, on PCR [Police Control Room] duty, who allegedly brought the victim to police station, are under suspension.”
