Sarabjit death, Sajjan Kumar acquittal, coalgate issue rocked both the Houses

The Lok Sabha was adjourned twice during Question Hour on Thursday as Opposition members triggered uproar over the death of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh in a Pakistani hospital and Congress leader Sajjan Kumar’s acquittal in anti-Sikh riots case.

As soon as the House met for the day, members of the Akali Dal rushed to the Well waving placards and demanding appeal in court against the acquittal of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in anti-Sikh riots case.

Several members were also seen raising the issue of the death of Sarabjit Singh after a murderous assault in Pakistan’s Kot Lakhpat jail last week.

SP members were also in the Well raising slogans against the government over its handling of the issue of Chinese incursions in Ladakh.

As members were unrelenting, Speaker Meira Kumar adjourned the proceedings till 11:30 am.

Similar scenes were witnessed when the House reassembled, prompting M Thambidurai (AIADMK), who was in the Chair, to adjourn the proceedings till noon.

Uproar in Rajya Sabha

Rajya Sabha was adjourned till noon on Thursday after opposition uproar over coalgate scam, Chinese incursions and acquittal of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

As soon as the House met for the day, BJP members trooped into the Well shouting: “Pradhan Mantri Istifa do, Istifa do (Prime Minister resign)” and “Pradhan Mantri sharam karo, sharam karo (shame on you Prime Minister)” over alleged attempts to influence CBI probe into the coalgate scam.

Some BJP and Akali Dal members held posters against the acquittal of Sajjan Kumar. One of the posters demanded an investigation by an SIT appointed by Supreme Court.

Samajwadi Party members too joined them in the Well shouting slogans against Chinese incursions. “China ki dadagiri nahi chalegi (Chinese highhandedness will not be tolerated),” they shouted.

Chairman Hamid Ansari asked members not to come into the Well or display posters.

With members not heeding to his requests, he ordered live telecast of the proceedings to be shut-off.

But as the members continued to shout slogans, he adjourned the House till noon.
