Panel to probe stampede

May 17, 2010 01:43 am | Updated November 17, 2021 06:41 am IST - KOLKATA:

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has ordered an inquiry by a high-power committee into the stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station that claimed two lives and caused injuries to 15 persons.

She announced an ex-gratia of Rs.2 lakh for the bereaved families and Rs.50,000 for the severely injured.

“It is an unfortunate incident and we do not know whether it was a case of sabotage, rumour or negligence. The committee that will be inquiring into the incident will look into the details, determine what happened and who are to be blamed, who are responsible…I cannot say right now how it actually happened,” Ms. Banerjee said here.

“We are shocked for the family members concerned,' she said.

Pointing out that the “administration cannot always control” passengers, particularly when there is a “summer rush,” she said: “It is for the people to take care also.”

“Anywhere, anytime things can happen if we do not take proper care,” she added.

People coming to New Delhi Railway Station to see off their loved ones will not be able to enter platforms from Monday with the Railways deciding to stop sale of platform tickets to control crowd inside.

The decision was taken following a stampede in the railway station which claimed two lives and injured eight others on Sunday.

“We will stop the sale of platform tickets from tomorrow. This is aimed at controlling crowd inside the platforms,” a Railway official said here.
