Peacocks often wander outside their sanctuary at the Kasu Brahmananda Reddy National Park in Hyderabad. In a city that’s rapidly losing its green cover, this park is one of the few large, surviving lung spaces. The park isn’t without a threat. When the state government announced its ambitious Strategic Road Development Plan to be carried out in two phases, which would require felling or replacement of nearly 2000 trees on the walkway and the National Park’s buffer zone, it was met with wide protests in 2016.

A milestone

Brahmos test-fired from Sukhoi fighter jet

In a major milestone, the Brahmos supersonic cruise missile was today test fired for the first time from a Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jet of the Indian Air Force. The missile hit a sea-based target in the Bay of Bengal from the combat jet.

BrahMos, a joint venture between the India's DRDOand Russia's NPOM, is the world's fastest supersonic cruise missile with a multi-platform, multi-mission role. It is now capable of being launched from land, sea and air, completing the tactical cruise missile triad for India. Read more

A giant-size balloon was released for the MGR centenary celebration at the venue last week. The centenary celebration, which began in Madurai on June 30, was continuing in a grand manner in various districts across the State.

With a message that all was well in the faction-hit Samajwadi Party, former Chief Minister and party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav said he had blessed his son Akhilesh Yadav, and would continue to do so. “He is a son first and leader later,” said the veteran leader.

The father and son shared the dais in the party headquarters here after a long spell, as workers gathered to wish the SP founder on his 79th birthday.

Ahead of this year’s Thanksgiving, U.S. President Donald Trump pardoned two turkeys as part of a Thanksgiving ritual.

The pardoned turkeys, Drumstick and Wishbone, will join Tater and Tot, the two turkeys pardoned last year by Mr. Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama.

Thanksgiving is a public holiday in the US, originating as the harvest festival. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, so this year it will be on November 23.

A North Korean soldier made a desperate dash to freedom in a jeep and then on foot, being shot at least five times as he limped across the border and was rescued by South Korean soldiers, according to dramatic video released by the U.S.-led U.N. command.

“Robby the Robot,” the seven-foot tall creature featured in the 1956 science fiction film “Forbidden Planet,” was sold at auction for $5.375 million, a record for a movie prop.

Bonhams, which conducted the auction, said the price beat the previous prop record of $4 million for the 12-inch falcon statue in the Humphrey Bogart classic “The Maltese Falcon” and topped the $4.6 million for the white dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in “The Seven Year Itch.”
