Divers search Indonesian lake

Distraught relatives slammed Indonesia’s government for not enforcing basic safety measures on passenger boats and pleaded on Wednesday for a bigger search effort for more than 190 people presumed drowned after a ferry sank on a picturesque Sumatran lake early this week. The wooden vessel, overcrowded with passengers as well as dozens of motorbikes, didn’t have a manifest and disaster officials have several times raised the number of people it was carrying as family members who rushed to Lake Toba in northern Sumatra provided information.

Jammu and Kashmir was brought under Governor’s rule on Wednesday and the state Assembly put under suspended animation, a day after the PDP-BJP government collapsed with the BJP ending the three-year-old alliance with the regional party. President Ram Nath Kovind approved imposition of Governor's rule in Jammu and Kashmir.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday called on Prime Minister of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel and discussed ways to expand bilateral cooperation in trade and investment, space, digital India and people-to-people relationship. Ms. Swaraj, who arrived in Luxembourg on the third leg of her four-nation tour yesterday, became the first external affairs minister from India to visit the European country. Ms. Swaraj also made a courtesy call on Grand Duke of Luxembourg Henri Albert Gabriel Felix Marie Guillaume and exchanged views to further strengthen 70 years old diplomatic relationship between India and Luxembourg, and impart an upward trajectory to our bilateral ties.

Thousands of devotees and holy men from across the country assemble every year at the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati for three day long Ambubachi festival,which begins on June 23. The door of the Kamakhya Temple, seat of the  Shakti cult, wlill be closed for three days for the festival,for which elaborate security arrangements have been made. Ambubachi, also called ‘ameti', is associated with the fertility cult of Goddess Kamakhya and is said to mark her annual menstrual cycle.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday visited the family of the soldier, who was abducted and killed by terrorists two days ahead of Eid, and described him as an inspiration for the nation. Accompanied by senior Army officers, the Minister went to the remote hamlet of Salani in the border district of Poonch to express her condolences to the family of slain soldier Aurangzeb.

Actor Kamal Haasan, who launched his "Makkal Needhi Maiam" party in February, met officials  in the Election Commission in connection with the registration of his party. Recently, while answering queries on whether the party would contest if the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission announced the local body elections, Mr. Haasan said: “Absolutely. That is what we are aiming at.”

Monsoon rains in the Palakkad district has gained momentum with heavy downpour being reported in many parts of the district. The South West monsoon in full swing in Kerala in last few weeks. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted "heavy to very heavy rain" coming days The Met Centre here has warned of strong winds reaching 40-50 km per hour across the Kerala coast and warned fishers to be cautious when venturing out into the sea.
