Left won’t join forces either with Congress or BJP

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) does not see any scope for advancing general elections, contrary to reports of the country heading for early polls.

CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said here on Saturday that Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and BSP supremo Mayawati had made their intentions clear that they were unwilling to allow the United Progressive Alliance government to fall. Mr. Yechury was responding to queries on Mr. Yadav’s call for the formation of a third front ahead of general elections.

He said the Left parties were continuing their efforts for an alternative that was based on policies and not on individuals or leaders. People were vexed with the policies of the Congress and the “communal BJP.” “The results in the next elections will be against the Congress and the BJP. The Left is set to improve upon its position.”

He termed “too premature” the talk of the Congress projecting Rahul Gandhi and the BJP Narendra Modi as their prime ministerial candidates.

The Vajpayee-led NDA government had attempted to allow foreign direct investment, which the Left opposed and the Congress supported. “The situation has changed, with the Congress allowing FDI and the BJP supporting our views.” He asserted that the Left was not prepared to join forces either with the Congress or the BJP. The CPI(M) would focus on mobilising support for agitations on issues of public importance.
