The Communist Party of India (Marxist) is planning a year-long programme to mark the birth centenary of Jyoti Basu, the longest-serving Chief Minister of any State in the country.
Left Front chairman Biman Bose said the main function would be held at Mahajati Sadan on his birth anniversary on July 8 when the programme would be announced and launched.
The CPI(M)’s labour wing CITU has already announced a year-long programme to mark the occasion. Mr. Basu, was its founder vice-president. He passed away on January 17, 2010 at 95 years of age.
It was learnt that a party State committee meeting would be held for half a day on July 8. The session would be dedicated to Jyoti Basu and would be attended by party general secretary Prakash Karat when the programme would be finalised.
Mr. Bose apprehended that the venue for the July 8 meeting would fall short of space and people might overflow on to the main thoroughfare. He added that efforts to host the function at another more spacious venue fell through as the State government had taken time to accord its nod, after which it was difficult to complete regulatory formalities.
Besides setting up a centre for social studies and research in Mr. Basu’s name (for which a body has been registered) a request has also been made by the party to the Centre for releasing a stamp on the leader.
