Stating that “suicide in a high-security jail is a matter of serious security lapse,” National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Mamta Sharma while reacting to the death of Ram Singh, one of the key accused in the December 16 Delhi gang rape case, said on Monday that “there should be a probe by competent authorities to ascertain what pushed Singh to commit suicide in his cell.”

The NCW Chairperson said that it was shocking that the jail administration could not protect an under-trial in its high-security zone.

“We hear that the Union Home Ministry has now sought a detailed report from Tihar Jail administration after the incident and we welcome the move. We have also got information that forensic experts have already visited the jail premises to collect samples from where Singh reportedly hanged himself using probably his own shirt. This death has posed serious questions on the security provided to the other accused in this case and we urge the government to ensure that these men should be kept under strict ‘suicide watch,’” she added.

Seconding the stand taken by the NCW, Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Barkha Singh said: “It is a matter of surprise that Singh hanged himself inside the jail which is constantly under monitoring.”

“The entire nation and even the world are waiting for the accused to be hanged and for justice to be delivered. But now the main accused has reportedly hanged himself in a place where security is supposed to be very tight. The security regime followed by the jail authorities should be reviewed after the incident.”
