One person was arrested on Sunday in connection with the alleged gang rape and murder a day earlier of a middle-aged woman near Barasat in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

The woman and her husband worked at a brick kiln near Barasat, over 30 km from here. The husband, who was assaulted by the gang and forced to drink a toxic substance, was admitted to a hospital.

Her family has alleged that she was gang-raped and killed.

However, District Superintendent of Police Sugata Sen told The Hindu over telephone that the post-mortem report did not mention of rape. “The report also said that there were no signs of external injury or abrasion on the victim’s body. We have arrested one person in connection with the incident. Investigation into the matter has started,” he said.

The accused also worked in the same brick kiln.

Reports said the woman had injuries on her head and some weapons were recovered from a nearby pond by the Criminal Investigation Department, which is now investigating the case.

An FIR was filed by the woman’s son, the police said.
