A woman, suspected of having links with the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), was arrested by the police here on Sunday after she arrived at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport from Bangkok on an Air India Express flight.
A resident of Nawada Village in New Delhi, Jyoti Rana, carried three passports along with a mobile phone that contained several Pakistan numbers and certain documents.
Police sources said that Ms. Rana is suspected of trafficking young men to South-East Asian countries by luring them with job promise and later involving them into militant activities.
A lookout notice was circulated by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) against Ms. Rana based on a first information report lodged against her at the Uttamnagar police station in New Delhi by a youth who was duped by her earlier.
Based on the information provided by the IB, immigration officials detained Ms. Rana immediately after she landed at the NSCBI Airport.
Denies ISI link
Though she denied having any connection with the ISI and claimed that she was working as a housemaid in Bangkok, Ms. Rana was arrested on the charges of holding forged passports and cheating, police said.
The district’s additional superintendent of police (Barrackpore), P.K. Tripathi, told The Hindu that a team of the New Delhi police will be arriving in the city on Tuesday to seek the transit remand of Ms. Rana.
“The phone numbers obtained from Ms. Rana’s mobile have not been checked thoroughly till now. Whether she had militant links or not will be clear after further interrogation,” Mr. Tripathi said.
