A woman deserted newborn twins at a Balasore hospital on Thursday.
The baby boys, about four-day-old, were admitted to the paediatric ward of the district headquarters hospital on Tuesday, doctors said.
However, the woman, believed to be their mother, vanished without informing anyone, said Rabindra Patnaik, in-charge officer at the police outpost on the hospital premises.
The woman, according to hospital records, was identified as Runi Singh, wife of Raju Singh of Paikapada village under the Oupada police station area of Balasore district, Mr. Patnaik said. The police had begun a search for her.
The babies, suffering from cold-related aliments, were rushed to the special newborn child care unit of the hospital and their condition was stable.
Couple's claim
Another couple undergoing treatment at the medicine department, claimed right over the twins, saying they were relatives of the woman who was missing. According to them, she had gone to the village for bringing money.
In another incident, villagers of Ambera under Harianta gram panchayat in Kendrapara district said they found a newborn baby boy in a carry bag kept near a bush. The child was taken to the Pattamundai government hospital.
