Even as the UPA government faces a crisis after the Trinamool Congress withdrew its support from the alliance, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday said the Janata Dal (United), a key NDA ally, would support any party at the Centre that will give special status to his State.
While he described the political situation as “critical” after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s party withdrew its support on Tuesday, Mr. Kumar did not, however, say whether the JD(U) would come in for Trinamool.
“I will extend support to anyone in the formation of the next government if it grants special status to Bihar,” the senior JD(U) leader said, addressing a public meeting.
Mr. Kumar said the political situation at the Centre had turned unstable after the Trinamool pullout.
However, Mr. Kumar indicated that the government might not collapse after the Trinamool’s withdrawal, as the Congress was adept at managing the numbers. Still, it would have to suffer ignominy in the next parliamentary polls.
He said Bihar with 40 Lok Sabha seats would play a leading role in future.
