Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh on Sunday stoked a fresh controversy saying why can’t the Bharatiya Janata Party field a “better leader” like Sushma Swaraj as its prime ministerial candidate.

Ms. Swaraj, however, was quick to dismiss Mr. Singh’s comments on Twitter. “Even I think Digvijayaa Singh ji is a better candidate than Rahul Gandhi.”

Her tweet followed Mr. Singh’s tweet slamming the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi over his remarks that Jawaharlal Nehru did not attend the funeral of Vallabhbhai Patel.

“ Couldn’t BJP find a better leader? What’s wrong with Sushma?”

Not the first instance

This is not the first time that Mr. Singh has called for Ms. Swaraj to be named BJP’s prime ministerial candidate. Last year too he had said it was her “right” to be seen as a contender for the prime minister’s chair.

Contradicts Modi

Contradicting Mr. Modi’s alleged remarks about Pandit Nehru not having attended Sardar Patel’s funeral, Mr. Singh cited the autobiography of the former Prime Minister, Morarji Desai, saying it “confirms Nehru and Rajendra Prasad’s participation at the funeral in Mumbai”.
