With Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis leading the campaign, the Bharatiya Janata Party won big in the Maharashtra municipal elections, with the party coming out on top in eight of the 10 corporations. The Shiv Sena, which decided to go it alone, won Mumbai and Thane.

In the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, it was a close call with Uddhav Thackeray and his Shiv Sena winning 84 of the 227 seats, and the BJP bagging 82. In Pune, a stronghold of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), the BJP did extremely well, winning 98 of 112 seats, leading to celebrations by party workers. The NCP managed to win only 40 seats and the Shiv Sena barely 10. Mr. Fadnavis thanked the people of Maharashtra for the victory and said they had voted for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policies, including demonetisation. The Chief Minister had campaigned for transparency in the municipal bodies.
