The BJP has reiterated that it would not accept any “damage to or tampering with Ram Sethu” for the proposed Sethusamudram project, maintaining that it is a sacred structure associated with Lord Ram.

A resolution adopted by the National Council meeting of the party here argued that with an “objective approach,” an alternative route could be constructed for the project linking the Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar between India and Sri Lanka by creating a shipping channel through the shallow sea.

The resolution said the Centre’s intent became suspect after it filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court questioning the very existence of Lord Ram and subsequently withdrew it in the face of protests. Appreciating the initiative of the AIADMK government to declare it a monument of national importance, the resolution noted that “Lord Ram epitomises the essence of India’s cultural, spiritual and civilisational heritage. The identity of India is incomplete without him and the story of Ram is incomplete without Ram Sethu.”
