BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad accused the Congress of not looking beyond the "Nehru-Gandhi family", even while deciding on the Bharat Ratna.

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday said it would confer the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, on former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee if it comes to power after the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

Addressing reporters here, party leader Ravi Shankar Prasad accused the Congress of not looking beyond the “Nehru-Gandhi family”, even while deciding on the Bharat Ratna.

“But when we come to power, Mr. Vajpayee will be given his due,” he said, pointing out that those from the “family” were the first to be given the prestigious award, irrespective of their contributions.

He cited the examples of Sardar Patel and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad who were conferred the award many years after their death.

Taking on Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi for describing the BJP as “chor (thieves)”, Mr. Prasad said he [Mr. Gandhi] often spoke of his legacy but had failed to learn anything from it. “I have never heard Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi or even Rajiv Gandhi use the kind of language he uses,” Mr. Prasad said.

Raising the issue of the Darbha attack in which senior Congress leaders were killed, Mr. Prasad demanded that the NIA report be made public so that the truth behind the attack is revealed.

BJP is again loosing the larger picture. Instead of focusing on winning
2014 and giving a stable goverment which is very must the need of the
hour, they are to such petty issues. Moreover, why to give a post-
independence politician given Bharat Ratna. I am wondering what he has
excelled in comparing to the likes of E Sreedharan and M.S Swaminathan.

Vajpayee is statesmanly deserving to get Bharat Ratna which no political
opponent will dare to criticize.

If only one sportsperson like Sachin and one industrialist like Mr. JRD Tata were awarded this respect then its an anomaly if the politicians are presented awards in droves especially the ones in the post independent era. May be we should institute a separate award for politicians so that they can keep appreciating themselves depending on the politics of the day.

What a shame! even our politicians are not sparing highest honour of our country for their political gains.

Former Prime-Minister Mr.A. B. Vajpayee is already a Ratna of Bharat. An example being his ability to run a government with 24 different political parties. His character, oratory skills and charm is appreciated by all. Leaders in the BJP must follow his values in politics rather making such statements for selfish and personal political gain. Former Prime-Minister A.B. Vajpayee's selfless contribution to the BJP is a lesson for all. The present leaders are making it a habit by asking the government of the day to give the highest civilian award to this or that person. When the person whom they recommend get it, they go to the next person in their list. No party has the solutions or time for the Aam Admee.

For what? For being a head of a coalition Govt., run on DMK's
compulsions ? Bharat Rathna has become a joke under politicians. Mr.
Prasad should know BJP cannot win on promise of conferring Bharat Ratna
to anyone - for that matter even Mahathma himself - . They can hope to
win only on a clear charter of governance on economy, stability and
security. I request BJP not to stoop to the level of congress

Its unfortunate that even highest civilian award such in the country is
being used as a political instrument. The panel that selects the winner
of award, along with other awards must be an independent one. Only then
we can recognize the worthy people. Otherwise, they will all go to
politicians, just like how it went to former Prime-Ministers, just
because their party was in power.
