February 27, 2017 12:28 am | Updated 02:41 am IST - NEW DELHI

The CBI suspects that there were 90 instances in the Vyapam scam in which candidates lied that the middlemen, who had hired examinees to appear on their behalf, were dead.

Bright students were hired in large numbers by the candidates to take the medical entrance examination conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board known as Vyapam, CBI sources said.

The sources said the candidates were approached by middlemen who engaged other middlemen to identify bright students in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Delhi and Rajasthan who could impersonate those taking the test. The candidates did not know the second middlemen or the impersonators.

Photographs morphed

In many cases, the photographs submitted online by the candidates were allegedly morphed in such a way as to match with the impersonators who were supposed to take the test examination on payment of a fee, the sources said.

The agency has registered 170 FIRs in which 74 final reports have been filed, while 96 are under investigation.
