Violence erupted and anti-India slogans were raised at a police sports event at a college in Anantnag of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.

Students threw stones and indulged in arson at the Government Degree College in the morning when police officers assembled to begin the district-level sports event. “There was an attempt to vandalise the venue by some miscreants. Since it was a college, the police showed maximum restraint. Later, the college administration took over and managed it well. The situation is normal now,” Deputy Inspector-General of Police, South Kashmir, S.P. Pani told The Hindu .

Eyewitnesses said the protesters set fire to the tent meant for the opening ceremony. The police used tear-gas shells. Several hoardings were burnt. “The event was later inaugurated without trouble,” Mr. Pani said.
