Veteran Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and MLC Vasudev Singh died after prolonged illness on Monday morning at Delhi’s All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), a party press release announced.
The 81-year-old had been ill since last month. He was elected to the Begusarai Vidhan Sabha seat in 1990. He was a Council member from the teachers’ constituency in Darbhanga for three terms.
He was a popular leader in the teachers’ and people’s movements, the release said.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his condolences and said that Mr. Singh would be cremated with State honours.
“His demise is a loss to politics as well as the social movement,” Mr. Kumar said.
The National Alliance of People’s Movement, in a tribute, said : “He set an example of simplicity by riding to the Vidhan Sabha on a bicycle. He led a life of struggle. In 1942, he participated in the Quit India Movement. His contribution was not limited to his party. Like a true revolutionary he supported many progressive movements.”
