Amid the spate of accidents involving illegal structures, Minister for Urban Development and Housing Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday said he had taken steps to fix accountability among officials involved in urban development.

Speaking at a press meet here, Mr. Naidu said he had drawn up a 25-point list of reforms for dealing with the construction and demolition of illegal buildings.

All States, the Minister said, had agreed to the proposal, which was drawn up after the recent incidents in Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai.

The issue of illegal constructions could be “resolved” when officials, including supervisors, working in urban development and housing are held accountable for the violations, he said.

Urban local bodies would also be held responsible for the construction and demolition of illegal constructions. Stressing, besides this, the need for a multi-pronged approach, Mr. Naidu said: “Urban local bodies, the State and the Centre have to work in unison.” Incentives for good job Other than creating consensus on the matter, incentives would be given to those who did good work, he said. Mr. Naidu said Central Ministers had been directed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take swift decisions.
