The former Rajasthan Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje, is likely to maintain her profile as Leader of the Opposition when the Assembly meets for a short session from Thursday.
Ms. Raje, who returned here on Tuesday after reportedly tendering her resignation from the post on the directive of the BJP leadership, is scheduled to preside over a joint meeting of Opposition MLAs, being held on the eve of the session to decide on floor strategies. Her colleagues here confided that Ms. Raje, who met senior BJP leader L.K. Advani and BJP president Rajnath Singh in New Delhi to discuss her future outside Rajasthan and the fate of the two suspended MLAs who supported her, has already put in her papers.
However, as she so desired, the party leadership acceded to her continuing till the end of the coming session. “Thereafter, she will formally resign as Leader of the Opposition,” a BJP leader said on condition of anonymity.
Unlike her trip to Delhi a few days ago which was almost a roadshow, her return was a quiet affair. Soon after reaching here, she started consulting her MLA supporters. Sources close to her said Ms. Raje is scheduled to meet Mr. Rajnath Singh again on August 29 in Delhi.
Despite internal squabbles, the BJP has managed to keep the Opposition together and Wednesday’s meeting is expected to bring together three MLAs of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the lone Janata Dal (United) MLA as well.
The State BJP president, Arun Chatruvedi, said that the party MLAs stood united behind Ms.Raje. “There is no division over the leadership issue as it has been already settled.”
