An 11-week drama in the BJP ended on Friday with party president Rajnath Singh’s announcement that he was accepting the resignation of Vasundhara Raje as Leader of the Opposition in Rajasthan.
At a meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Board here, he said he was accepting her resignation, sent to him earlier in the day, in accordance with the board’s decision. The BJP had asked Ms. Raje to quit the post following the party’s dismal poll performance in the State.
In the morning, Ms. Raje met Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha L.K. Advani and apparently mentioned in a note that she was being singled out for this treatment when several other States, including Delhi, had performed badly in the Lok Sabha election.
Separately, a short note of resignation was sent to Mr. Singh’s residence through an emissary, Board member Sushma Swaraj told journalists.
Mr. Advani did not brief the Board on what transpired between him and Ms. Raje.
