US to push for India’s case at NSG

June 21, 2016 03:08 am | Updated November 17, 2021 05:09 am IST - WASHINGTON:

The US will continue to nudge members of the Nuclear Supplier Group (NSG) to take up India’s application for admission, during the plenary of the 48-member club in Seoul “this week itself,” said State Department Spokesperson John Kirby.

Asked for his response on the continuing Chinese opposition to India’s membership and Beijing’s statement that the question was not on the agenda of this week’s plenary, Mr. Kirby said: “During PM Modi’s visit the president reaffirmed that India is ready for membership, and we continue to call upon the participating members of the NSG to support India’s application at the plenary session this week itself.”

Asked whether the U.S has taken up the issue with China in any bilateral conversation, Mr. Kirby said: “India’s application is something we continue to talk to other members about. This is not a new topic of discussion. “
