U.P. to give financial aid to Muslim schoolgirls

Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav said on Monday that the Uttar Pradesh Government had decided to provide Rs. 30,000 each to Muslim girls who passed Class 10, for pursuing education and marriage. The launch date would be announced soon.

Addressing party workers at its headquarters here, Mr. Yadav referred to the Sachar Committee report, which had stated that the condition of Muslims was worse than those of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes. In its election manifesto, the Samajwadi Party had promised to give special aid to Muslim girls.

According to party spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary, who was present, the SP chief said efforts were on to fulfil the promises made in the manifesto within five years.
