An 18-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide as she was “disturbed” for not being able to pay her school fee due to poverty, police said here on Monday.

Yasmeen, a Class XI student at a private school, had on Sunday consumed some poisonous substance. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she died later, Kalyanpuri police station in-charge Santosh Singh said.

The girl’s father Yaqoob, a truck driver, alleged that the school had been mounting pressure on his daughter to pay the due amount of Rs 1,500.

“Since we were unable to arrange the money, she was disturbed and took the extreme step,” he said.

No FIR has been lodged in the case so far, police said.
