A married couple, suspected to be members of the top leadership of the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), a militant outfit that has been active in parts of north Bengal in the past, was arrested following an encounter between security forces and militants in the Kokrajhar police station area in Assam on Saturday.

The man, who was injured in the encounter and admitted to a hospital, is suspected to be Dhananjoy Burman (known by several other names), considered the second-in-command of the KLO. His wife Sumitra is a sister of Jiban Singha, the self-styled commander of the outfit, who, it is believed, is sheltered somewhere in Bangladesh, said K.L. Tamta, Inspector-General of Police (North Bengal) .
