The Maharashtra Assembly committee, appointed to probe the cop-legislators fracas that repeatedly disrupted the proceedings of the Legislature last month, has found two legislators guilty of assaulting Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Suryawanshi.
However, the panel report, submitted to Speaker Dilip Walse-Patil on Thursday, exonerated three other members charged with assaulting the cop and recommended revoking their suspension, while charging Mr. Suryawanshi with “rude behaviour” towards elected representatives.
The committee, headed by veteran MLA Ganpatrao Deshmukh, recommended a departmental enquiry against Mr. Suryawanshi.
While Mr. Walse-Patil read out the major recommendations of the committee, he did not allow any discussion on them and said the government would study the report and take call on the matter in the Monsoon session starting July 15.
Last month, MLAs led by Kshitij Thakur (Bahujan Vikas Aghadi) and Ram Kadam (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) viciously assaulted Mr. Suryawanshi within the Assembly complex on the grounds that he ‘provoked’ Mr. Thakur while he was seated in the visitor’s gallery of the Assembly.
The committee found Mr. Kadam and Mr. Thakur guilty of the assault, while demanding that the suspensions slapped on three other legislators, Jaykumar Rawal (BJP), Rajan Salvi (Shiv Sena) and Pradeep Jaiswal (Independent) for their alleged involvement in the ugly fracas, be revoked.
The committee also observed said that while Suryawanshi was beaten, the injuries sustained by him were “minor” and “not grievous” as made out.
