Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed and twenty five were injured in two different attacks here on Monday.
Witnesses said that militants on Monday afternoon fired at two paramilitary CRPF men from close range near a Bank, in Lal Chowk area, killing them on the spot. The slain troopers have been identified as Malik Arjun and Raj Shekhar, both from CRPF’s 28th Battalion. CRPF spokesman, Prabhakar Tripathi said that two of his men were killed while sixteen people including two troopers and two policemen were injured in twin attacks at Lal Chowk and Batmaloo.
The shopkeepers pulled down their shutters while the transport was suspended through the area following the killings. Police detained a taxi driver and seized three motorcycles apprehending the same were used by militants to carry out the attack. The area was cordoned off and life came to a halt for sometime.
Minutes after this shoot out, militants lobbed a grenade on the patrolling party of CRPF in Batmaloo area. Twenty civilians, thee CRPF men and two J & K Police personnel were injured in the grenade blast.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Central Kashmir range, Hemant Kumar Lohia, told reporters that it was likely the handiwork of a joint module of Hizbul Mujahideen, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad. “But we have pictures captured by CCTV and there is one suspect who was moving on a motor cycle. We are trying to zero in on him” he said .
