Two live mortar shells of 1971 Bangladesh war era have been recovered at Kamalasagar near Agartala on Monday. They were found at the same lake where another shell was found on March 13 this year.
“Labourers engaged in digging the lake found the shells. We would hand them over to the Army for dismantling purpose with permission from the court tomorrow”, local police officer Jibesh Shyam Roy told The Hindu .
He said bomb squad of the State police has expressed its inability to dismantle them and only experts of the Army can do it. He added the digging and cleaning work in the lake would take some more days to complete, and thus he expected recovery of more ammunition.
Kamalasagar, 20 km south of Agartala, had a base camp of Bangladesh freedom fighters in 1971. The place located on edge of Bangladesh border had also witnessed a fierce battle between India and Pakistan armies.
Police said the shells have rust all around and ordnance details cannot be read to know which Army possessed them. Police have put the shells in a water container as a safety measure.
