FIGHTING FOR A CAUSE: Activists protest in Mumbai on Wednesday against Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code that criminalises homosexuality.

Several celebrities and activists vocal on social network site, Twitter, have been giving vent to their anger on the micro-blogging site over the Supreme Court ruling on Wednesday that overturned the Delhi High Court verdict decriminalising gay sex.

Ever since the Supreme Court gave the ruling, the hashtag #Sec377 has been trending across the country, where Twitter has over 15 million users.

Filmmaker and television show host Karan Johar, who directed a segment centred around the stigma attached to being homosexual in the 2013 feature film, Mumbai Talkies , tweeted: “#Sec377 is not just a violation of human rights but also makes democracy seem like a mirage in our country ....”

New age politician Jayaprakash Narayan, founder of Lok Satta Party, tweeted: “India legalized abortion vide MTP Act in 1974 and gave women rights over their lives and bodies far ahead of many rich countries.” “Similar spirit should inform our approach to Section 377. This is not an issue of culture. It is about personal freedom. No more, no less.”

Veteran actor and icon Amitabh Bachchan raised the question through his verified twitter account: “How will the law authorities decide or apprehend those that commit this ‘crime’!!??”

Young actor Siddharth, who has a big following for his verified account on the social networking site, tweeted: “We are calling our citizens criminals for doing something that is their fundamental birthright to do & is natural. Mera Bharat kahaan ? Sad.”

Union Minister for Information and Technology Kapil Sibal, who recently registered himself on Twitter, tweeted: “The Govt is considering all options to restore the High Court verdict on #377. We must decriminalise adult consensual relationships.”

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, a regular on Twitter for a long time now, tweeted: “Govt had submitted affidavit to SC supporting the Delhi High Court judgement on 377 as legally sound. Didn’t see the need for legislation.”

Narendra Modi’s verified twitter handle did not tweet anything on the subject.
