Truckers to go on indefinite strike from June 18

Truck operators from across the country and affiliated to the All India Confederation of Goods Vehicle Owners’ Association (ACOGOA) will go on an indefinite strike from Monday.

The strike has been declared to protest the rising diesel prices, toll charges and a steep rise in third party insurance premiums.

“Trucks carrying essential commodities will not participate in the strike. We don’t want people to be inconvenienced but we want the government to wake up to our problems,” said Rajinder Singh, General Secretary ACOGOA.

There are around 27 lakh trucks in Maharashtra, 3% of which ferry essential commodities. According to Mr. Singh, the diesel price increased by ₹3.33 between May 14 and May 31 increasing the running cost by around ₹100 crore a day in the industry.
