Truck operators called off their strike five-day-old strike on Monday, following an extended meeting between apex truckers’ body the All India Motor Transport Congress and Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Mr. Gadkari said a committee had been formed under Transport Secretary Vijay Chhibber. Truckers will be represented in the committee and a report on their demands will be submitted by December 15.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Gadkari said two unions had pulled out of the strike and he was going to meet the third.

Mr Gadkari told reporters that the truck associations’ grievances on service tax and the tax deducted at source had been forwarded to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley who said that he would try to address them in the Budget. All the tolls on the highway would be converted to e-tolls within three months to shorten the waiting time for truck drivers, Mr. Gadkari said.

“The strike has impacted government revenues to the tune of over. Rs 3,600 lakh realised through road transport,” an analysis by Assocham said.
