The Tripura government has introduced a pension scheme for transgenders. The Council of Ministers at its weekly meeting on Tuesday also decided to a pay a monthly pension to women domestic workers and patients suffering from leprosy and AIDS.
Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, who briefed reporters on the decisions, said the Left Front government had been providing social security to the underprivileged, the deprived and patients.
Monthly pension up to Rs. 500 would be given to transgenders. The State government was currently sponsoring 20 pension schemes that benefited more than one lakh people. The number was set to go up after Tuesday’s announcement.
The Council of Ministers also resolved to draw the attention of the Centre to the complications in disbursals under MGNREGA. It observed that the new system was delaying payment procedure and creating confusion.
