Trinamool to oppose land acquisition Bill

Sudip Bandopadhyay says there is no consensus on Bill

The Trinamool Congress is against several provisions of the proposed Land Acquisition Bill and it will oppose the Bill in its present form.

“They [the Centre] might claim to have clinched a broad consensus but there is no total consensus on the Bill. We will oppose it,” Trinamool leader in the Lok Sabha Sudip Bandopadhyay told The Hindu here on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, after a meeting with representatives of different parties in New Delhi, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath said there was a broad consensus on the Bill. No member of the Trinamool was present at the meeting.

Reiterating his party’s stand against any government role in land acquisition, Mr. Bandopadhyay said it was against both the 70/30 and 80/20 provisions for land acquisition.

Union Minister for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh had called him several times in the past few days in connection with the proposed Bill, the Trinamool leader said.

“The Centre should accept the recommendations of the Standing Committee of Parliament on the Bill,” Mr. Bandopadhyay said.

The committee had suggested that the government should not acquire land for private projects. But the Centre rejected the recommendations stating they were “regressive.”
